Shivalingam has three parts; the lowest is Brahma-Pitha, the middle one is
Vishnu-Pitha, and then the uppermost is called the Shiva-Pitha. The Shiva Linga
is carved from the stone. This Linga can be very large and also can be very
small, below to the knee-height.
In Hinduism, it is believed that Shivalinga can help us in going beyond
consciousness. The most sacred Lingas are Jyotirlingas. Jyoti means “Light” and Linga means “Mark”
and hence Jyotirlinga defines “Radiant Sign of Lord Shiva”. All these make Lord Shiva “Mahadeva” which means Great God.
Devotees also use the term “The Destroyer” for Lord Shiva. He is considered a
member of the holy trinity along with Vishnu and Brahma.
